How long does Nextcloud keep versions and deleted files?

Your WebOké Nextcloud automatically clears out old versions and deleted files, so your storage doesn't fill up. You don't need to do anything yourself. Here's how it works.
Deleted files
- A deleted file stays in Deleted files for up to 31 days. After that, Nextcloud clears it out automatically.
- Deleted files together may not use more than half of your free space. If they do, the oldest ones are removed sooner, even if they're not yet 31 days old.
- So it's best to restore a file straight away if you notice you're missing it.
Versions
Versions are kept for up to 31 days. During that time, Nextcloud thins them out according to a fixed schedule: the older they are, the fewer versions remain. Versions older than 31 days are cleared out by Nextcloud, except for versions with a name.
| Age of the version | What's kept? |
|---|---|
| First hour | Approximately one version per minute |
| First day | One version per hour |
| Up to 31 days | One version per day |
| Older than 31 days | None, except versions with a name |
Versions together may not use more than half of your free space. If they do, the oldest versions are removed first. Nextcloud never automatically clears out versions with a name (see Restoring an older version and naming versions). So give a version a name if you want to keep it longer.
Do they count towards your storage?
No. Deleted files and versions don't count towards the storage you see at the bottom left in Files. See also Viewing your storage: what counts and what doesn't.
Tip: for files you really can't afford to lose, also keep your own copy. Read more about this in Backups with WebOké: what we keep and what you can do yourself.
