What is a domain name?
A domain is not your website
Your domain name is the address. Your website (files, code, content) is what is shown at the domain name and is separate from the domain itself. You need both, but they are two separate things. You can register a domain first and build a website later.
Domain ≠ hosting
Hosting is the space where your website files actually live. You need a domain to direct visitors to that hosting. Think of it as: address = domain, the building = hosting, the shop = the website.
How does DNS work?
When someone types your domain, the browser asks the DNS system (Domain Name System): "where is this website?". DNS returns the IP address and the browser loads the site. This happens in milliseconds. Our nameservers are fast, redundant and monitored 24/7.
Can you buy a domain forever?
No, domains are registered per year (or multiple years in advance), not 'bought'. Some providers offer multi-year registration but that is a trick — behind the scenes they renew the domain annually, even if you've pre-paid for e.g. 5 years. Transfer your domain to another provider within those 5 years? Then you'll lose the prepaid amount and have to pay again for annual renewal at the new provider.
