DNS settings with your own mail and a dynamic IP address
If you don't have a fixed IP address, you can get a free account at dyndns.com.
This article explains which DNS settings are needed to run your own mail server, for example an Exchange server, and to make sure the mail for your domain arrives there.
- FTP - A - IPaddress1
- localhost - A - 127.0.0.1
- example.nl. - A - IPaddress1
- www - A - IPaddress1
- example.nl. - NS - ns1.webawere.nl.
- example.nl. - NS - ns2.webawere.nl.
- mail - MX - 10
- mail - CNAME - examplenl.dyndns.com.
- example.nl. - TXT - "v=spf1 include:webawere.nl a:examplenl.dyndns.com ~all"
Replace IPaddress1 with the IP address of our server, replace example.nl with your own domain name and replace examplenl.dyndns.com with your dyndns.com account.
NOTE: If you have a fixed IP address or no dyndns account, adjust it as follows:
- mail - A <your IP address> (delete any other MAIL - A records first)
- example.nl. - TXT - "v=spf1 a:mail.example.nl -all" (replace example.nl with your domain)
Finally, with DirectAdmin, click modify MX records and untick Use this server to handle my emails. If not, change the MX record and uncheck this option. If you use Plesk, disable mail in the control panel. This prevents the server from trying to deliver mail to itself.
DNS changes take a little while to take effect, but everything should work within a few hours.
