Adding a mailbox to Outlook

We start this article with our opinion on Outlook: do not use it.

There are several reasons for this. First of all, privacy and security.

Did you know that the new versions of Outlook send all your incoming and outgoing emails, as well as your email address and password, to Microsoft's servers without good reason and store them there forever?
With an IMAP connection, your email client normally sets up a direct connection with our server: your email client collects the mail directly from our server, and when you send an email, it is sent directly from our server.
That way you always know where your emails and data are stored: on your local PC and on our server, and you always have access to this data yourself in your DirectAdmin account.

Outlook works differently. You give your password and email address to Microsoft, and they then store them on their servers.
Your Outlook client connects to the Microsoft servers and the Microsoft servers connect to our servers, so your local email client/PC has no connection with our servers; instead, Microsoft is an unnecessary "middleman" acting on your behalf.
All your emails stored on our server are synchronised with Microsoft's servers and remain stored there, even if you disconnect your mailbox from Microsoft again.
If you do not want all your emails and the login details of your mailboxes to be stored in the American Microsoft Cloud, and you do not want to lose control over your data and your mailbox, do not use Outlook.

What do we recommend instead?
Fortunately, there are plenty of secure, privacy-friendly alternatives; our favourite is Thunderbird.

Still want to add your mailbox to Outlook? Then follow the steps below.

PC:

Step 1: Open Outlook and choose to add a new mailbox, then enter your email address.

Step 2: Do not click Sign in here. Choose 'sync directly with IMAP'.

Step 3: Choose 'show advanced settings' and enter the settings manually.

Server name: Enter your domain name here, i.e. the part after the @. Does this not work? Then you do not have an active SSL certificate, or your domain's DNS does not point to our server. In that case, enter the name of the server your hosting package runs on. It looks like this: linux2022.webawere.nl; replace the digits with your server number.
This server name is in the email you received when you purchased the package, and you can also find it in My WebOké (mijn.weboke.nl) under My Products: the list shows the Server column with the server name for each product.

IMAP and SMTP username: this is always the full email address

IMAP and SMTP password: you set this password when you created the email address. Forgotten it? Click here to set a new one.

Incoming port: 993

Incoming encryption method: SSL

Outgoing port: 587

Outgoing encryption method: StartTLS

Step 4: Done! Your email address has now been added to Outlook. You can use the same settings to add your email address to Outlook on your smartphone and to other email clients.
